Ethiopia Agricultural Data (2025)

Crop & Plant Data

Teff (Eragrostis tef): Ethiopia's flagship cereal. Improved varieties like Bishoftu and Dagem yield ≈27 qt/ha versus ~14–15 qt/ha for local landraces.
Maize (Zea mays): Dominant hybrids (e.g. BH-660) yield ~3.39 t/ha on small farms. Planted in Meher rains (June–July), harvested Oct–Dec.
Wheat (Triticum aestivum): Representative variety Dendea yields ~2.54 t/ha. Sown late Belg (Feb–Mar) or early Meher (Jun–Jul), harvested Aug–Dec.
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor): Chare variety yields ~2.33 t/ha. Planted in Belg or early Meher.
Planting/Harvest: 2025 Meher cereals began harvest in Oct and finish by December.

Soil & Land Data

Soil Types: Nitisols (23%), Cambisols (19%), Vertisols (18%) dominate. Often low organic matter and acidic.
Land Use: ~12.5 Mha cultivated (cereals/pulses). Approximately 15% of land is cropland.
Irrigation: Only ~0.64 Mha irrigated (≈2% of farmland). >98% of farming is rainfed.

Weather & Climate Data

Rainfall Seasons: 2025 Meher rains (Jun–Sept) were delayed in June but above average in Jul–Sept. 2025 Belg rains (Feb–May) were poor in south/center.

Market & Economic Data

Commodity Prices: Local maize prices jumped 20–44% (Jan–Jul 2025 vs. 2024) due to currency depreciation. By Aug 2025, prices stabilized but remained ~5–20% above year-earlier levels.
Supply/Demand: Good 2025 Meher harvest raised food availability in central/western Ethiopia. However, pastoral and southern areas face deficits.
Trade: Coffee exports (Jul'23–May'24) were ~252,000 t (≈$1.2B). Ethiopia remains a net importer of grains.

Policies & Subsidies

Fertilizer: Ethiopia finalized a ~$3 billion agreement with Dangote Group to build a chemical fertilizer plant in Gode (Somali Region).

Livestock & Aquaculture

Inventory: Africa's largest livestock population. Estimates (circa 2018): ~70 million cattle, 52.5 million goats, 42.9 million sheep, 8.1 million camels.
Production Targets: Government aims for 28.4 billion liters of milk, 1.7 million t of meat, 5.5 billion eggs and 260,000 t of fish by 2030.
